The names of the victims and their medical conditions were not available Thursday morning, but NBC5’s Kim Vatis spoke to witnesses who said they thought the shooting was the result of a robbery.
Witnesses said the shooting happened in the mall’s parking lot at about 9 p.m., just as the stores inside were closing.
Calumet City police responded to the parking lot at 96 River Oaks Center Drive to reports of two people shot, according to Calumet City police Capt. Zorzi.
Zorzi said one person was taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields and another was taken to Saint Margaret Mercy Hospital in Hammond, Ind. with non-life threatening injuries. They may have since been released, Zorzi said Thursday morning.
Shoppers and nearby residents expressed concern over the violence.
“If you can’t come to the mall and shop without getting shot, then, you know, I don’t think you need to be there,” said Calumet City resident Bobby Feggett.
Vatis said that Wednesday’s incident was not the first shooting at the mall. Last summer an armored security guard was critically injured after being shot in broad daylight. Surveillance video captured that shooting, but no one has been apprehended in that incident.
