Chicago Violence

April 23, 2008

CHICAGO — An outburst of gunfire rattled the city during the weekend, with at least nine people killed in 36 separate acts of violence.

The shootings were reported from Friday until Monday morning, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Monday. They included gang shootings, drive-by attacks, and even one case in which someone used an AK-47 to shoot up a plumbing supply store.

Then on Monday evening, a man was shot to death and three other people were wounded in a robbery attempt at a McDonald’s, police said.

Authorities did not immediately say whether any of the weekend shootings were thought to be related.

Police Superintendent Jody Weis blamed an excess of guns and gangs.

“There are just too many weapons here,” Weis said Sunday. “Too many guns, too many gangs.”

During the same weekend last year, there were 19 shootings, including four homicides, and 21 shootings were reported during the same weekend in 2006, police statistics show.

New police data released Saturday showed Chicago’s murder rate for March was down about 1 percent from March 2007.

We Need God!

April 22, 2008

As I sit here reading the Word of God this morning I was overcome with a sense of our desperate situation that we are all in. Violence all around us is on the increase and people are turning away from God trying to find answers to this life on their own. Proverbs 1:32 “For simpletons turn away from me—to death. Fools are destroyed by their own complacency.“. We need to end the complacency that we have for things of this world and develop a Holy discontent till we can enter into the presence of God.

It is time for the church to lift up a standard of prayer and fasting that will destroy the yoke of the enemy! Join with us as we pray, fast and seek the very presence of God!

Fun Week

April 16, 2008

What a blast we have had this week. Monday we went on a church trip to see the White Sox and we had such a great time! I don’t think I have laughed so hard and for so long as I did that night. Then tonight I played a little basketball (well actually I just stood there and passed the ball to Dexter). Also, Rick and I spent the day yesterday picking up furniture that has been donated and things from Children’s hunger Fund to use in our outreach to the community. So, it has been a physical week but it was a lot of fun!

Now please pray for me tomorrow as I make a presentation about who we are and what all we are doing to benefit the community.

Busy Weekend

April 14, 2008

It is Monday once again and again I am exhausted as we had a very busy weekend. The week ended with some dicouraging news yet after spending much time in I do believe that God is working all things out for our good. Saturday, we went to the Short wedding and it was great to just reconnect with friends and experience the joys of the love that is always felt and experienced at a wedding ceremony. Our worship team came together Saturday evening for practice and there was plenty of laughter and joy as they wroshiped the Lord together. Then Sunday, we had two really great services with man of our rescent visitors back in attendance. The best part was seeing soem old friends of ours as they worshiped with us this weekend and then we all went out for lunch. It is always nice to have friends come out and support what we are doing. I really feel encouraged knowing that they may become a part of our regular worship experience. Finally, we had a baby shower at the church for one of our young ladies that got married and moved away. She and her husband were here and we had a great time just getting everyone together to celebrate and have fun.

Wedding

April 12, 2008

Today we attended the wedding for Jordan and Catherine Short. Jordan is the oldest son of Pastor Dave and Valerie Short. The Short family have been a tremendous blessing to Camille from her days at University of Illinois to the present. There tremendous love for the Lord was evident the first time I met them and they immediately welcomed me into their Crossroads family. When I see children of people close to me getting married I am reminded that time is quickly escaping me and I am getting older by the minute.

Weddings are great though as they serve as a reminder of the happy day that I shared with Camille over five years ago and they give us a chance to see people that we haven’t seen for a while. So not only is the wedding a blessing for the couple that is getting married but it turns into a huge blessing for all in attendance.

So now it is time to get ready for an awesome Sunday as we set the stage for our Praise and Worship team to gather together for prayer and practice so that we can present our very best to the Lord. Make sure you invite someone to come out with you tomorrow as we continue our series on being a person under construction.

Police are looking for a man who broke into a home in Riverdale and shot a woman and a girl while they slept.

Pray

April 10, 2008

I have been on the phone with various community leaders nearly all afternoon. Earlier today I was informed about two shootings in the Pacesetter community in Riverdale. One shooting took place Sunday evening and another yesterday. We have to pray and seek God on behalf of this struggling community if we are going to experience the power of God as He moves on the heart of the people to end the violence.

We certainly have our work cut out for us and I believe God is calling for us to begin to get radical for Him! Get ready ROCC!!

Chicago Hope Academy

April 4, 2008

Today I had an incredible opportunity to speak to the students at Chicago Hope Academy. This is really an incredible school situated on the near west side of Chicago. The students were so energetic during their chapel worship time that it made for a great time. It is always wonderful to be able to share with young people what God has done in my life so that hopefully they will not try the same things rather they will give their life over to Christ early on!
